More about this scene
Thrapston is still remembered for its American connection. Sir John Washington, who was knighted by Charles I and was buried in the local churchyard, was the brother of Lawrence Washington, whose son John emigrated to America and became the great-grandfather of George Washington, the first President of the United States. The church contains a tablet showing the coat of arms from which the Stars and Stripes originate.
