One hundred years before this, there were no large shops in the town, and the age of the department store was still a few years away. If you needed to buy a pair of boots in 1855, the local shoemaker would have perhaps fifteen or so pairs for show. From these you would select a design and they would then be made to order. The nearest place where ready-made boots could be bought was Burslem.
