More about this scene
Kirkgate (its name comes from the Danish words for 'church way') is seen here from the west end of the cathedral. This shopping complex with its sweeping lines still contains large national shops, and seems unthreatened by the new Ridings Centre, off to the left down Southgate. Until 1938 the City Time Ball over a jeweller's store was linked to Greenwich, and dropped down its tube at 10am and 1pm. This upper part of Kirkgate was declared traffic free in 1976.
