More about this scene
The Priory was built as a friary for Franciscan Grey Friars in the 14th century. At the Dissolution of the Monasteries, it was given as a private house to Thomas Birch, one of the yeoman of the Crown. In 1685 it was bought by Robert Hadley of Great Munden and eventually passed to Martin Hadsley Gosselin, who carried out major restorations in 1849. In 1913 a Mrs Croft purchased the Priory, and during the Great War offered it as a hospital for convalescing soldiers. After the Great War, it passed to Ware Urban District Council (later Ware Town Council) on a 999-year lease at a rent of three shillings per annum. In 1994 a major renovation programme was carried out by the Priory Trustees.
