Ware, The River Lea c.1960

More about this scene
It is difficult to imagine this peaceful river scene as it was only twenty years previously. Then, it was a bustling port with barges moored two or three deep unloading timber and barley. A few more years earlier, there would have been the occasional sailing barge with huge brown sails. During the Second World War, much of London's stock of timber was moved to the yards at Ware belonging to such companies as Albany and Gluckstein. Commercial barge traffic ceased about 1949, but the river continued (and continues today) to be used for recreational and leisure purposes.
