More about this scene
Low tide in the Basin of what was still generally known as Bridport Harbour. Sailing vessels are grounded on their keels. The prominent building is the George Hotel (left). This side of the harbour had been the shipbuilding yard in Bridport creek. Elias Cox was the last major boat-builder. Chalets would be built across the site. The Esplanade, also behind the photographer was paid for by Thomas Colfox and opened in 1897 as part of the celebrations of Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee. St Andrew's Mission Church was in a sail loft glimpsed immediately to the left of the sailing ship shown in the centre of this photograph.
