More about this scene

Here we have an unusual sight: the stern line leading aft of the brigantine, moored alongside the quay to the far side of the harbour, is stretching across open water, a potential hazard, particularly at night. Normally, the reason for this to occur would be when the ship is leaving port in such restricted water. She would take the strain on the stern rope and be warped off her berth. It is unlikely for this to be happening here, though – there is no mooring attendant on the jetty, and there are no men visible on the ship.
