More about this scene
A ghaut (a Viking word) is a narrow passage leading to the river. There used to be an inn at the end of this one, so in the local dialect it became known as T'inn Ghaut. It was deemed picturesque by artists and photographers, but life was hard here. Providing boots and shoes for the children was a major problem for parents, and there was a special charity for this purpose to assist them. It is not surprising that a place renowned for fishing should have a large feline population, for there would always be enough fish scraps to feed them.
