More about this scene

The Metropole Hotel was one of the first in Whitby to have electric light; its glowing windows were a landmark for ships. After the Great War the holiday trade was resumed, and summer time saw the arrival of visitors with their young families. If the beach was too far afield for the older generation, then there were plenty of seats and shelters along the clifftop where one could sit in the sun or the shade, and catch up with the news in the Yorkshire Post or the Whitby Gazette. Early Days 1956

Wonderful Experience spent my sixteenth birthday at the school, Memories fade, I believe my house master was a Mr Morrell? My badge was all blue, I had to go to his room for my assessment sat in front of a blazing log fire. Dock End
In the above picture, the two cobles in the background are Jean (right) and Valerie (the smaller one), and the one with a man on the foredeck is Enterprise WY.47 my Dad's coble, and that is Dad painting the foredeck. Enterprise was built as a open coble in Amble, Northumberland in 1947 and Dad had her half decked in Whitby by Will Clarkson who was a well known boat builder and whose yard was further up the river. Ellisons Yard Baxtergate Whitby
I have been looking for Ellisons Yard in Baxtergate, the birth place of my grandmother, Mary Jane Boyes. I have been left Whitby for some 45 years now and have started to do my family tree. Gran was born in 1889 along with several other siblings. Her father's name was William Wright Boyes born 1861 and mother's name was Alice Boyes, nee Harland, born 1864. Genealogy & Research Images

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
