More about this scene

The lord of the manor, Hugh de Vere, Earl of Oxford, was granted a market charter in 1245. He laid out a market place outside the castle ramparts which still survives, although it is somewhat encroached upon. It was never a very successful one, and was unable to compete with Aylesbury, Winslow and Buckingham markets. By the end of the Middle Ages it had ceased to function, and the town reverted to a large village.
