More about this scene
Despite redevelopment, the facades of these buildings, which cluster around the medieval market place, remain recognisable today. Standishgate's mock-Tudor embellishments were added during the 1920s; with the distinctive Burton's building, they lend elegance to the main shopping street. Associated with George Formby and George Orwell, Wigan was also the butt of music-hall jokes, but the pier does exist.
