A brisk climb above Winchester is always well rewarded by the beautiful views of the city, its handsome and historic buildings clustered round the hollow in which this one-time capital of England sits. To the right of the cathedral is Winchester's 19th-century Guildhall, its bracket clock made by a local craftsman.

This was a pub in Winchester near the train station. I used to go there around 1966 to 1972 ish. Wondering if anyone else remembers the place. I was at sea and spent many hours there whilst on leave. Philip duncombe.
The boy in the photograph is my grandfather, Herbert Ward, who was born in Winchester in 1911.
I started work at the Hampshire Chronicle offices in the High Street as a cub reporter in the early 1960's under the benign eye of Monica Woodhouse and news editor 'Jock' Coutts. It was a great place to be - we reported on every court from magistrates to assizes, every council from parish to county, we did passing-out parades at the Green Jackets barrracks. Considering I spent 5 years as a day boy at Peter Symonds' my memories are scant to say the least, probably the most significant was the Annual Founders Day service at the Cathedral, the covered passage from the High Street past the school outfitters by the Cross and into the precinct of the Cathedral, the majestic city hall building further down.
