Does anyone remember a bakery, run by someone bearing the name Burgess, which also sold iced cakes? My Father worked there before the war and learnt to decorate cakes. Although eventually following a completely different career path he continued to make the most amazing birthday cakes for myself and my siblings. Much of his life is surrounded in mystery and I would very much like to know more about this phase, the Burgess family and what happened to the bakery.
When I was Five we lived in Byfleet and often visited the Woking Lido in Summer. I nearly killed myself by sliding down the slide unsupervised. Fortunately my father saw me and dragged me out. When I was Six my sister and I boarded at the Frithe Knowle School, in Wych Hill Lane (1948). The principal was Miss M Windsor and our teacher was called Miss Robinson. I was born at St Peter's Hospital in Chertsey in 1971 the eldest of 3. We lived in Orchard Mains until I was 4 when we moved to Hook Hill Park. I have fantastic memories growing up. We made friends with all the children on our road and spent hours playing in the woods which backed on to our road. In the winter we went sledging down the steep slope of our road. I only went to the pool a handful of times as a child, but have happy memories in spite of being pushed into the deep end (which led to years of fear of water which I happily conquered in my 30's!). I remember the surrounding parkland being lovely. I agree with the person who said the new pool wasn't quite as nice, although I spent many a good time in the Leisure Centre doing circuit training in the gym in the 1990s!
