More about this scene
On the right is that ubiquitous feature of west country beaches, the lime kiln. This one was built by the Chichester family in the 18th century; it burned Welsh limestone, which was held to be superior to the Devon limestone. The lime trade died out in the late 19th century with the rise of chemical fertilisers and the increasing popularity of cement.
