More about this scene
This fortified gateway, completed in 1369, guarded the entrance to the monastic precincts and was formerly known as St Mary's Gate or Priory Gate. It acquired the name of Edgar Tower in the 18th century because an ancient statue of 10th-century King Edgar stood above the gate. The tower was restored 1900-1912 and a new Edgar placed in the niche.
