More about this scene

It may look typical, but the park has an unusual distinction in that it forms Worcester's memorial to the Great War. It was acquired by the council in the 1920s and named after the Flemish village where the Worcestershire Regiment made a heroic charge in October 1914, helping to save Ypres and halting the German advance on the channel ports. But for 'the gallant Worcesters' the war might otherwise have been lost at this early stage. The building in the park of these homes for disabled veterans added a valuable practical touch to the memorial.

Walked past this park every day on my way to secondary school between September 1974 and June 1979. I now love to walk round it with my grandson who is fascinated by the ducks and loves the play area.
