More about this scene
The photographer is standing on the west bank looking across to the original 1823 grandstand on the edge of Pitchcroft. The grandstand included an hotel and was operated by a local charity, St Oswald's Hospital, until the City bought it in 1897, two years after buying Pitchcroft itself. The grandstand was demolished in 1974 and its replacement opened in 1976.
