Remembering Wray In The 1930s And 40s

A Memory of Wray.

I was born at Alcocks Farm and attended Wray School in the early 1940s before we moved to Arkholme. My Auntie Lucy was the headmistress at Wray School (Mrs Lucy Bateson) and the teacher in charge of the infants class was a Mrs Roberts. I also remember the Rev Bell being the Vicar at Wray and I think he probably christened me, he certainly christened my brother. My grandparents lived in Roeburn Terrace opposite the empty silk mill which always seemed a frightening sort of place, I believe it has now been converted into housing. From granny's we walked along 'The Spout' which came out into the village by the school and Mr Newton's shop which seemed to sell everything.
