Watford, High Street c.1961

More about this scene
The spacious northern end of the High Street, with its central water garden and carefully tended flowerbeds, marks the area where the market hall stood until 1853. The modern shopping area is dominated by the offices of Eastern Electricity on what was clearly a very warm summer's day, judging by the number of opened windows. Very few of the male pedestrians, however, are prepared to divest themselves of their heavy jackets, and while the ladies appear more comfortable in their summer dresses, these full-skirted garments required the under support of crisply starched petticoats for their effect.
