The Metropole Hotel was one of the first in Whitby to have electric light; its glowing windows were a landmark for ships. After the Great War the holiday trade was resumed, and summer time saw the arrival of visitors with their young families. If the beach was too far afield for the older generation, then there were plenty of seats and shelters along the clifftop where one could sit in the sun or the shade, and catch up with the news in the Yorkshire Post or the Whitby Gazette.
