Trolley buses ran along Green Lanes from Finsbury Square; turning right for Enfield at Mason's Corner. The 244 route went from Collegiate School, Winchmore Hill to Muswell Hill. Chalkleys the bakers was on the corner of The Green & Broad Walk had houses for celebrities & football champions. I did part of my nursing training at Highlands hospital in the late 50’s. I had lived in Winchmore Hill most of my childhood, certainly all through the war years, although I was sent to boarding school in Weybridge at 7 years of age so a lot of my time was spent away from home. I have happy memories of the end of war years as a child, the VE and VJ celebrations with dancing in the streets and street parties. ...see more
I lived in Oakwood in the 1950's and had friends who lived in Winchmore Hill so knew the area well, and went to Minchenden school from 1954 to 1956 to do 'A' levels. I remember Evans and Davies where the money whizzed across the shop to the cashier. Often went to the Intimate Theatre and saw some good plays there, and the Odeon cinema in Soutgate, the Capitol in Palmers Green were favourite venues most Saturday evenings - no TV in those days!
I have fond memories of Winchmore Hill where I was born in 1937. We lived in Hadley Way till about 1949, then moved to Slades Hill in Enfield. I went to St Pauls School (Mr Gayler) then Minchenden. I well remember The Intimate Theatre where a 'waitress' with white apron served tea from a trolley in the interval! Also The Capitol cinema and Palmers Green shops - especially Evans and Davies where your money went ...see more
