Battenhall lies off London Road and was first recorded in Norman times, when the Poer family held the manor for the annual rent of one lamprey.
The Manor House, far right, dates from 1743; the original owner was Elenor Ellis.
The wing nearest to us was removed in the early 17th century to obtain a view over the park. Queen Elizabeth visited in 1578, and the Prince and Princess of Wales in 1864.
Park Mill, a watermill built in 1795, became part of Batemans and is restored to working order. Burghurst manor house is opposite the church. Rampydene is a fine brick house built in 1699.
On her death, Isabella, queen of Edward II, succeeded to the Manor. In 1337 Edward III gave the castle to his son Edward, the Black Prince, as part of the newly created Duchy of Cornwall.
In 1580 Elizabeth had leased Carey the Manor of Berkhamsted, which included the ruined castle and the deer park, at the nominal rent of one red rose.
The pretty village of Thorp Arch with its green, Manor House and old mill leads down to the banks of the Wharfe, with the bridge (1772) carrying the road to Boston Spa.
The original lords of the manor were the Fittons, then the Venables inherited the land and, in the 15th century, the two Venables heiresses each took their half of the estates to their husband's
Along with the building to the left, it is now part of an amusement arcade, yet much of the original façade remains intact.
