When this view was taken, Manchester Road was a much more important shopping street than it is today.

The 1898 view shows the earlier type of blinds used by the shops to protect their goods: the awning is supported on wooden posts driven into the road surface.
The shops displayed their wares to the elements. The traffic was slower, but the pace was more fervent. The encouragement to buy was the most important thing of the day.

So, they had to build attractive housing within easy walking distance of work, and provide shops and places of worship.
From 1959, the 450-acre site was slowly developed as a pioneer shopping park.

Then comes a fish and chip shop, an Indian take-away and the apparently closed E H Deer, a tobacco and newsagent`s.
