More about this scene
Silverdale is a beautiful limestone village in the midst of woods and craggy outcrops. It is classed an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and has always attracted visitors, some of them famous, like Mrs Elizabeth Gaskell with her 19th-century awareness of struggling workers. She married a Manchester Unitarian minister in 1832 and stayed at Lindeth Tower (dated 1816) in Silverdale. From here she described the sunsets and the views across the Kent estuary and the Irish Sea.
