Nostalgic memories of Skellow's local history

Share your own memories of Skellow and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I was born and lived in skellow until 1965, but visited my Grandfather there until the early 1990's I remember Elaine & Pat's Garage, as my grandfathar used to fill his car up there.. They were wonderful people, and my memories were always of a special "treat" of a bar of chocolate from the little wooden "shed" they had by the pumps. I remember them building their bungalow there. Happy days.
When the V2 Rockets started to land in London, (June 1944) our whole school was evacuated. We did not know where we were going. We arrived by steam train at Doncaster and were taken to Skellow Village. Various households came and chose children from the tired little souls very late in the evening. I went home with Mr and Mrs Yapp to 60 Xfields Lane and met their son Raymond. I learned a lot from those 10 ...see more
I was born 6th January 1956 in the living room, in those days at No4 Lodge Road, Skellow. The midwife arrived on her bike from Woodlands, in the end my mother's mother delivered me weighing 9lbs 8 ozs, I was born on a Friday. We lived in a pit house as my dad worked on the pit top in the lamp cabin. He used to go to work every day on his bike, I used to wave to him when I saw him coming home and we all could hear the pit buzzer from Bullcroft Colliery!
I was born in Skellow, 1 George Street. My dad, grandad and uncle worked at the pit; my dad and grandad in the power house. I have some photos taken here with my mum, I used to go here everyday, on the swings, bobbys hat ect, we lived on Mansfield Cresent so it was only a little walk away. I remember my dad coming home from work from Askern Coalite on his bike, he crashed into the fencing there ripping his arm open, luckily his pal, Cliff Penno, was a first aider and sorted him out.
I remember a painful memory - freewheeling down here on my pushbike and the brakes not working - then slamming into a car at the junction in the bottom left corner.
This is what we always called Fivo or the proper name was Five Lane Ends. Some people just called it Skellow with it being the next village. The garage is on the left just out of shot - I remember that being run by Elaine & Pat, and then the road on the right, again out of shot, will have lead you to Skellow Dyke where as kids we used to often go fishing for taddies (tadpoles) especially on a hot sunny Sunday ...see more
Cannot remember that much of Skellow school, but i do remember going on a weeks trip to Ingelborough hall in class 8 that would have been Mrs Lee's class. I was around maybe 9/10 yrs old then & with it being my first time away from home without my mam & dadIi was terribly homesick. The Headmaster at that time was a Mr Senior who reminded me of the vicar out of dads army. The scene today from the pic hasnt changed that much either. Being so long ago, thats about all I remember.
