More about this scene
These boats up on the pink shingle beach are probably rowing boats for hire - they were painted red, white and blue. The more sober-coloured fishing boats are at the far end of the beach: they were 12- to 14-foot crabbers which each worked 40 pots, and 18- to 25-foot herring drifters which could haul in 40,000 fish in one go.
