Chesterfield, High Street c.1955

More about this scene
The post-war years saw the spread of high-street chains, and Chesterfield was no exception. In this picture we can see local branches of Timsons, Alexander, Burtons, and Boots. Just beyond Boots is Irongate, a part of the old town, with its medieval pattern of narrow lanes and alleyways. Threatened with demolition in the 1960s, the Shambles was saved and rehabilitated in the late 1970s.
