More about this scene
This romanticised version of life at the Castle in medieval times can be seen in the Town Hall. It was painted by James Waylen, born in Devizes in 1810, the son of a clothier, Robert Waylen. He was first an engineer, then a painter, and also an historian; he wrote 'The Chronicles of Devizes' in 1839. As a contrast, there is a contemporary tapestry hanging on the stairway, which celebrates the 850th anniversary of the town's borough status.
