More about this scene

The high banks along many stretches of this great river confirm its habit of flooding. The Severn is no longer a major route for commercial traffic, but it does link up with some significant Midland canals. At Gloucester, boats and barges, carrying mainly timber and grain, could pass into the basin by way of a lock. In this picture, neat rows of empty steel barges are lined up against the quay at Wait James & Company's warehouse.

Happy Days
I was born in Gloucester in 1949 & had a really wonderful childhood there with my two younger brothers. In the early years, we spent our school holidays exploring Robinswood Hill. Taking picnics, lighting & cooking on fires, just having so much innocent fun. We lived on an estate that was a close community although we didn't realize it in those days. Alger & Blackmore Hardware Shop No 28 Westgate
'The Grate People'. Famous for cooking ranges, fireplaces etc as well as general ironmongery. Opened in 1905, wound-up in 1965. Started by my great-grandfather & partner from the west country. There is a re-creation of the shop in Gloucester Folk Museum nearby. Although the shop looks nothing like the original, they do have authentic items on display. The site is now a Nationwide building society branch and no trace of the original frontage remains.

Tiger H
Tiger H would have been built by John Harker Ltd, Ship Builders, of Knottingley, West Yorskhire. My father born in Knottingley, was Captain on various John Harker petrol tankers from the 1930's - 50's, in Gloucester. He did not work on Tiger H, but I have heard her being mentioned at various times, when my family would chat about various vessels from those days.

Brunswick Baptist Church Gloucester
Hi, Brunswick Baptist Church (Brun) is going to be celebrating it's 200th anniversary next year. I am looking for old photos, memories, etc that could possibly feature in a book we are trying to put together. Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
