More about this scene
The courtyard of the New Inn is easily reached from Northgate Street. Legend states that Maria Theresa, the 2ft 10in 'Corsican fairy', was to be seen here in the 18th century, along with a mermaid captured off the coast of Mexico: these shows charged an admittance fee of 6d.
