More about this scene
From Victorian times up to the start of the Second World War, Goudhurst and other Wealden villages among the hop fields were subjected to an annual late summer invasion of entire families from South London and the East End, who supplied the labour force for the harvesting of the crop. The workers were paid on a piece- rate, and here the overseer is seen entering the result of one family's endeavours into his record book. Central Kent
