More about this scene

Away from the bustle of the main Scarborough road lies the secluded village of Gristhorpe. Looking down the main street, we see the old post office (right), now two cottages. The new post office is in the Bull Inn, to the right, next to the tin-roofed church of St Thomas. Outside Prospect Cottage a young girl is caught mid-skip (centre right). To the left behind the memorial is the old Hall. Gristhorpe Man, a Bronze Age skeleton unearthed nearby in 1834, is now in Scarborough's Rotunda museum.

The cottage nearest to the telegraph pole was my grandmother's.  My uncles Ted and Bob lived there with her until they moved to Woodbine Farm,  Langtoft.  After they left, gran moved in with my family at the other end of the village, Meadow View, and Uncle Cliff and his family moved in until they in turn moved to the farm at the bottom of the village.  We think that the cottage at the forefront of the photo ...see more
