More about this scene
The Stanhope Memorial stands in the middle of the space where the market is held twice a week. All the buildings have changed proprietors except the big white building with the three dormer windows, which is still the post office. The Butter Market of 1853 (centre) is now Achurch Hardware Store, and the snack bar next door is now a pizza and kebab house. There is a blue plaque on the 1775 town house of Sir Joseph Banks (right). Sir Joseph came from the nearby village of Revesby, and the plants he brought back from his journey with Captain Cook formed Kew Gardens.
