More about this scene
By the 1950s, amateur yachtsmen 'messing about in boats' were a common sight. However, Lytham once had a busy commercial dock where large sailing ships unloaded; their cargo had to be moved on to Preston in lighters until Preston had its own dock. Fishermen's cottages indicate that inshore fishing and shrimping was a part of the scene, and there was still some golden sand on the beach.
