It was here and on the Market Place that local people met to protest about unemployment and hardship in the years following the defeat of Napoleon. In March 1817 the remnants of the Blanketeers arrived in the town, having been dispersed by cavalry at Stockport. Once again cavalry were waiting for them and only a handful escaped towards Leek.
