Northampton, Abington Street c.1950

More about this scene
Abington Street, now partly pedestrianised, saw considerable changes after this view was taken. Most evocative of past shopping is The Fifty Shilling Tailors, a chain that grew up before World War II and originally offered suits for that price. It occupied a building dated 1677, one of the first rebuilt after the 1675 fire. The building survives, but The Fifty Shilling Tailor is no more. Its rival opposite, in the 1930s Burton building, still survives.
