More about this scene
Described in 1549 as 'the round castle of Buitte callit Rosay of the auld', the first stone castle at Rothesay was a circular shell keep 142ft in diameter with walls 30ft high and 9ft thick; four projecting drum towers were added in the 13th century. The design is unique. The original parapet survives, embedded in the stonework of the subsequent extended curtain. Here we see part of the circular courtyard of the 13th century castle, a favourite spot with Victorian visitors for a picnic. On the left can be seen the honeycombed internal stonework of one of the turrets.
