In the picture we have two buildings
from the 1930s: Lloyd's Bank (1932) with
its giant arch, and the National Provincial
Bank with its neo-classical portico.
Set in magnificent
parkland, Kingston Lacy
was built in Chilmark
stone and designed by
Sir Roger Pratt for the
Bankes family; they
owned it until 1982,
when it was left to the
National
The businesses on the left
have all gone, but Barclays
Bank, the impressive
building on the right, and
Lloyds Bank farther up
the High Street remain
in the town - although
Lloyds has moved
Here, seen from near Poplar Point on the Berkshire bank, the eights race past the houseboats which lined the opposite bank to provide elegant floating grandstands for hospitality and shelter from the rain
That function for the modern
Theatre Royal (built roughly on the site of the GWR
offices) is fulfilled by The Bank, which in this picture
(behind the columns) is still a bank.
