Flat Holm and Steep Holm islands are in the background. On 11 May 1897, Flat Holm was used by Marconi to transmit the first radio signal across water.
The view from the tennis court shows the little-seen back elevation of Holme Hall.

The islands we can see are Hen Holme and the larger Lady Holme. The latter was the site of an ancient chantry, and is now owned by the National Trust.

Holmes in Thornton was a settled agricultural community for generations before Thornton amalgamated with Cleveleys in 1927. This part of Thornton was connected with Stanah (Stayna) by Holmes Brook.

The Holme takes its name from an ancient Scandinavian word which means 'an island surrounded by marshes', but the oldest part of the house dates only from the early 17th century.
