Pilton is an ancient settlement, one of King Alfred's four original Devon burhs (burh means 'defended place'), and was built to guard the estuary.
Pilton is famed for its pop festivals, which started in 1970.
Pilton was the original area of settlement before Barnstaple existed, and was cut off by bog and river until the 15th century.
To reach our final village, Pilton, we must leave our straight route at East Pennard and travel almost due north for a couple of miles or so.
The curving footpath was probably on the original road line from Pilton to Barrowden.
