Caption For Richmond, The Channel 1929

The coffee merchant E W Coleman's van is parked outside his shop (centre); beside its window is an LNER train timetable - Station Road is off to the left.

Caption For Saltburn By The Sea, Hazelgrove Caravan Site C1955

The Hazelgrove Glen was given to Saltburn by the Marquis of Zetland in 1899; it became the town's first free park in 1904, after some initial reluctance by the Town Council to adopt and develop it.

Caption For Bakewell, The Square 1956

Hulley's, a local coach firm, have one of their vehicles parked on the bus stand. Their stage carriage service reached - and still does - some of the more remote villages in the area.

Caption For Bosham, The Village 1902

The road now swings round into a car park, passing along the side of the Old Bakery.

Caption For Cranleigh, The Village Hall C1960

Village Way now passes to its left to the Leisure Centre and its car parks.

Caption For Littleborough, The Harbour, Hollingworth Lake C1955

In 1980 the lake became one of the top ten country parks in the country.

Caption For Chepstow, Beaufort Square 1906

The markets, which were so important to the town, were held here until they moved to a new site by St Mary`s Church, where there is now a car park.

Caption For Preston, War Memorial 1926

There had been a Boer War memorial on this site before this, but it was moved to Avenham Park. You can see it in some of our earlier photographs.

Caption For Bridport, East Street 1937

The freedom of the road, when roadside parking was an inalienable right, can be seen in a view westwards to the Town Hall (centre) from opposite the Golden Road Cafe (far left).

Caption For Holton, The Village C1960

The further building is the Lord Nelson, whose sign has been moved to the car park. Note the classic bubble car of the period (right).

Caption For South Benfleet, The High Street C1960

This was a centre for smuggling in the 19th century, with tunnels under what is now the car park.

Caption For Hurst Green, The Cross 1950

Again we see an empty road, but motor traffic has made an appearance in the form of two parked motor cars, one alongside a striped sign post to Clitheroe.

Caption For Wimborne, High Street C1955

The car park indicated at the corner of Mill Lane (left) was on the site now occupied by Safeways.

Caption For Corby, Maternity Unit C1962

A car park now takes up much of the grassed area, and the unit is now known as Corby Community Hospital.

Caption For Haddenham, The Green C1950

The lorry and tractor are parked casually - perhaps the owners are drinking at the Chequers, or visiting Lloyds Bank (left); a postman is delivering letters (right).

Caption For Church Crookham, The Cross Roads C1960

The first car on the left seems to be parked on the bend; the driver might have got away with this in 1960, but today this would be highly irresponsible.

Caption For Stockton On Tees, Ropner Park C1965

The park, situated along the Yarm Road, was the gift of Sir Robert Ropner, and was opened by the Duke and Duchess of York on 4 October 1893.

Caption For Ampthill, Market Place C1955

Caption For Felixstowe, Pier 1906

Perhaps the most interesting thing about this photograph is the parked car on the right.

Caption For Wickham Market, Market Hill 1929

The pump has been replaced with a car park.

Caption For Daventry, High Street C1950

The cars add a nostalgic note with Morrises, Fords and Austins parked alongside the pavements.
