More about this scene
In June 1940, one thousand six hundred evacuee children arrived by train from Ramsgate. First they were taken to Tenterbanks school, seen here on the right, for medical checks; then they went to the Market Hall, where refreshments were provided, before being dispersed to families around Stafford. Some of the older children returned to attend school here, upstairs, while downstairs the local primary schoolgirls continued their lessons. The school was demolished in 1967, and an extension to the college now stands here. The paddling pool in front is still a popular attraction on hot summer days.
