Education here probably started in 1135, when the Knights Hospitallers built their hospice on the site. Some of the material used in its construction dates from Roman times. The school was renamed Roger de Clare School in 1969 when Mr Pritchard was head teacher; it moved to new premises in 1974, when the building was converted to housing. As well as dancing on May Day holiday, the Standon Morris Men gather at the Stone at sunrise to dance a welcome to the first day of May.

I went to the school here. Mrs Foster was my Teacher and Mr Pritchard was the Head Master. We would cross the road to the village hall for Dinner. I vaguely remember having music lessons in the hall too (We all had recorder lessons). We were lucky enough to have a swimming pool, which was probably, almost unheard of in the 1970’s. When I lived in standon my mum was a teacher at the school I can remember May Day dancing in the street ,I have many memory's of swimming in the ford and helping to push cars that got stuck in the water .calling at westwoods on my way home from school and buying a lucky bag for 3d. I was the head teacher that was appointed.when Mr Butller retired.My family ,that is my wife and two children took up residence in the school house(part of the school building). We have many happy memories of our tenure.I was very impressed with the support that the parents gave me and school . Money was raised to provide a swimming pool and other needed facilities.
