Share your own memories of Streatham and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I went to st.helens school in valley road from 1955- 59 I remember miss tarry and miss howling who was very scary. If you got 3 very goods for your work you had to see miss howling for a gold star; however waiting to see her for this left me trembling.... I lived in Lewin Road and sometimes I walked to school with a ‘big girl’ at the school called Margaret Hill. The milk bottles for our break were warmed up on a radiator and tasted sour. My name then was Miriam Jackson
I was born in 1951 and started life in 4 The Chase, Norbury. The whole family lived nearby. My father Sidney Hill attended the Modern School. He was born in 1922 and lived in 47 Briar Avenue. He told me that almost all of his school class at the Modern School died on RAF duty. Was it really that bad?
Did Ice skating Saturday mornings, we walked down Russell Footpaths.... remember watching the United Dairies washing the GLASS MILK BOTTLES... remembered the lovely Dairy Shop in Valley Road... Went to St Helens School, end of Valley Road and Streatham Common North side, small private primary school few boys but mostly ...see more
I went to Sunny Hill primary school left in 1960 then went to Parkside in Brixton. Lived in Coventry Hall Polworth Road when it was the old convent turned into flats.
The night club under the Post Office was the Fouix Boo.. not sure if that's how it was spelt. Just up from there was a cafe called the Harbour Lights and a toy shop further up. I'm trying to find the name of the milk bar that was on the right hand side going up from Stanthorpe Road but before Gleneldon Road. My dad ran a car hire firm from one of the old stables in Gleneldon Mews. I lived in Stanthorpe Road ...see more
My family and I have lived at 48 Streatham Common North for the last 30 years. Next door to me at one time lived an elderly spinster who often regaled me with stories. She particularly loved to talk about her Army Major father who, seeing the houses being built on Streatham Common North in 1920, requested that all ground walls were covered with oak wood panelling- the only house in our group ...see more
The Astoria Garage, later to become Prynn & Stevens was located behind the Astoria Cinema, Open late - 24 hours? for petrol sales. Prynn & Stevens also had a car showroom on the Main street I did a 5 year apprenticeship there and after getting my City & Guilds of London certificate, emigrated to Canada in 1959.
Hello, Just seen your 4 year old request for a picture of Plater's Garage in Streatham. I do have a very detailed picture of the Garage frontage, somewhat pre-dating your Austin, being from 1907! It shows several Cars and Staff outside. Let me know if this is of interest and how I can get a copy of the picture to you.
A family home in Fernwood Avenue and education of sorts at St Joseph's College, New Park Road and Dulwich, saw me through to the late 50s. Dave Carey of the Swing Shop became a big influence and I joined various local bands with Trevor Swale, Pete Holmes, Tony Levy, Fred Ling, Colin Stevens and others before turning pro and eventually leading bands in Germany, on Ships and in various Clubs, Pubs and ...see more
I lived on Fairmile Avenue and Credenhill Street. My first school was Furzedown Primary. In those days, we roamed all over Streatham, playing on Streatham Common, Tooting Bec Common, and all the little parks in between. As a teen, we stilled stayed close to home. My good friends were John Mills, Chris Walsh, and Ken Pracy. My first girlfriends lived in Albert Carr Gardens, and Gleneagles Road. Fun times at the Regal and Odeon Cinemas, the old Ice Skating Rink, the Locarno, and the Rumbling Tum.
