More about this scene
Francis Frith's coachman takes a well-earned rest. His carriage has stopped near the summit of Kirkstone, one of the most famous of the Lake District passes, which connects Troutbeck with Patterdale. The pass is said to have taken its name from a large rock which looks like a gable end of a church. The photographer was looking south towards Troutbeck, with the shoulder of Broad End on the left.
