Share your own memories of West Ealing and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Opposite Deans Gardens was a little 2nd hand electrical and record shop. It was about two shops down from Drayton Green Road. Previously it had been on the other side of the road opposite the Wimpy Bar. There were second hand records both 45rpm and 33 1/3 rpm. This was my main interest. I never went in and bought a single 45rpm record always a handful. However there were tape recorders, ...see more
Where Leeland Terrace comes out by Deans Gardens there used to be a public toilets before Leeland Terrace was extended. Next to this was a shop called Retlaws. It is now a Pizza shop. However in those far off days Retlaws reigned supreme as a toy shop. Down the side was a little path in front of a long window. Woolworths for a small boy had a certain fascination, well for me it did. Firstly I remember being bought a tin plate trolley bus by my mum. It was Empire made. At the juction of Leeland Road and Leeland Terrace was the Jackaranda Coffee Bar. Around the late fifties this was the place to be. Unfortunately I was too young to go in. I used to ride from Hanwell on my bike and look at it in wonder. I can remember thinking that there were things to look forward to. The music, the clothes. Somehow there seemed so much optimismn around.

It was made of polythene as a lot of toys were then. Also they had an electric train set made by Rovex in Margate. They went on to become Triang. As a teenager I bought shirts there. I remember one with red spots on it. Quite stylish and fitted, it ...see more
F W Rowse was a department store on the Uxbridge Road. I remember on the ground floor you passed the furniture until you reached the toys at the back. On the right was material and patterns. I remember going with my mum and watching her buy material. There were big tables which had a sort of meter on where the material was unrolled and the assistant ran it through the meter to measure the length. There were also drawers ...see more
