More about this scene

This area was connected with the Sussex iron industry in the 17th century. The forests had deposits of iron ore, and supplies of wood fuel to smelt it; the iron-making families brought much wealth to the parish. Gravetye was built in 1598: it was the home of the ironmaster Roger Infield, who specialised in making cast iron graveslabs and forged nails. The house is now the Gravetye Manor Hotel. Great House, later called Manor House, was built by the Infield family in 1627. The church of St Margaret, with a shingled broach spire, stands above the houses. The neat topiary hedge-work seen on the left is in the garden of the 15th-century Priest's House, which is open to visitors. It is still nicely kept.

My name was Julie Beavis and lived in the village from 1959 to 1971. We were a very large family, I was one of 10 children. We lived in High Fields, North Lane next door to the Barnards who owned one of the two the village shops on one side and ...see more
