More about this scene

The beautiful white gates pictured here are not the ones that give this village its name - the name probably arose from much older gates at the nearby Vale Royal Abbey, once the largest Cistercian abbey in England. These gates date to 1776, and are currently being restored. The church is dedicated to St Mary; it is relatively modern, having been built in the 1870s to a design by John Douglas.

The first time I walked into the little shop nearest to our school reminds me of something out of a Charles Dickinson's novel the little bell tingling as you opened the shop door and a little lady behind the counter serving, we would spend 6p of our pocket money on sweets then walk back to school a long country lane picking damsons along the hedgerows. Sundays some of us would go to morning service at church rest of us had to go on a hike through Delemere Forest which I enjoyed.
I remember Marton Sec Mod Res (its posh title) better known as Marton Camp School. I left in 1964 and was in Coquet Dorm. My maiden name was Cardno then. It as the best 2 years of my life. I loved every minute, despite the odd caning from Humph! Was he ever without that pipe in his mouth? I saw Peter Herdman a few years back, but have not seen many others. I have just come back from a trip to Sandbach to ...see more
