Nostalgic memories of Wallington's local history

Share your own memories of Wallington and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I've recently moved into a flat at 20 Manor Road, and just interested to know if anyone has any history of the building or its tenants/owners back in the 1800's? Thank you, Nicola
I lived in nearby Harcourt Road. My late grandfather used to mow the grass and prepare it for the annual remembrance parade and open air service. During the hot summers the green would be packed by drinkers from the "Dukes Head" which is in the photo on the right. The green was the centrepiece for a parade of shops, both on Croydon Road and Manor Road. It brought together a small but friendly community, many ...see more
I went to Wallington County (no, we weren't 'Wally Boys' as people say these days), from 1957 to 1964. When our son followed me some 40 years later, I found the school very lttle changed from my day, apart from a new science block. They even still referred to the old science block as the 'New Block', and the new science block was therefore the 'New New Block'. Whilst I usually coped with academic lessons ...see more
I was baptised by the Rev. Brenn in 1945 and was sent to Sunday School from the age of about 4. I remember being scared to death by the head, the formidable Miss Hoof, who would give a loud blast on her whistle if anyone dared to mess about. My favourite day was the Tuesday after Whitsun when we all went to Bognor Regis for the day. We had to attend a 'short' service, which seemed to last ...see more
I lived just behind the Duke's Head from 1945 till the late 60's, and I believe this was where my parents met before World War II. My dad was working as a part time barman and my mother was sent by my grandmother to inform my grandfather, that it was time for him to drink up and get himself home for his tea! Mr Parker, the pub landlord in the 50's used to keep a dog called Duke. He was a friendly ...see more
I'm not sure whether this church was called Christchurch or Christ's Church; but as I recall it was originally a Presbyterian church which merged with, the then Congregational Church in Holmwood Gardens to form the United Reformed Church. Christchurch was then closed and remained empty for many years until it was sadly demolished to make way for Sainsbury. Incidentally, seeing the old concrete lamp posts in this ...see more
I remember corporal punishment, not being allowed to be left handed, lack of sports facilities and misery.
I was born in Cowper Gardens in 1946, my nan's, house No.11, where she lived until her death in 1979. My cousin was also born there and lived with her mum, Betty. I moved away in 1949 and lived in Peckham but used to spend school holidays with nan, and remember her neighbours at No.13, the Tiramanis, a lovely Italian family of 11 boys and 1 girl. The other side were the Hill family, the mum's name was Joan and ...see more
I was a teenager, I used to live in Carshalton from 1986, I went to St Philomenas between 1990-1996, I remember passing through Roundshaw Estate to use the libraries, there were fewer houses and it was just a massive field with just flats. It wasn't safe to hang around. I moved into Wallington in 1997 and used Roundshaw library and Wallington library more frequently, in 2004 10th October I ...see more
Growing up in Wallington in the 70s and 80s was fantastic! We moved to Wallington from Sutton when I was a few months old, the house was split into two flats, nana and grandad lived downstairs, mum, dad my brother and I lived on the top two floors. The garden was very large with a large garage at the bottom, which could take three or four cars, I remember one night, we hag a bad thunder storm, fork lighting ...see more
