Aldborough, just one mile from Boroughbridge, stands on the site of the Roman station of Isurium, and has a museum containing Roman remains. In this picture, children play round the old stone cross, said to commemorate the Battle of Boroughbridge. The carter has obligingly stopped for the photograph. Note that the girls all appear to be wearing smocks and hats.
